Inside Tour of a Rwanda Village Cultural Visit

As the dancing medicine man chants, the rhythmic drums beat, luring the senses to go deeper. It’s a full-on experience, visiting a Rwanda cultural village in Africa. From handmade animal skin drums to handcrafted Ficus-wood musical instruments, the sounds beckon…dance. Dian Fossey loved to dance hearing Rwandan drumbeats. Her staff would compose their own unique dances for the annual Christmas party she hosted. Even though studying and protecting mountain gorillas were Dian’s passion, she knew her Rwandan staff made it all possible.

In a Rwandan cultural village, you’ll also see natural woven designs, peace baskets, and sustainable organic gardens. My daughter Dawn especially loved the gardens after going to farm school in California in 2019. Seeing how the Rwandans do things is an education in itself.

Voices from the Mist is about my husband, David, and my experiences with our friend Dian Fossey, who saved the mountain gorillas from extinction in Rwanda, Africa. We volunteered at her Karisoke Research Center in 1985, just four months before her murder.
