To talk about Dian Fossey, we must talk about Louis Leakey's Trimates, Leakey's Angels, or Leakey's Primates. Louis Leakey chose Dian Fossey, Jane Goodall, and Birute Galdikas to study the great apes in their natural habitats.

Dian’s burial happened so quickly we weren’t able to attend. But we promised ourselves we’d come back and look at the beautiful hagenia trees and this wonderful meadow she loved, and we loved.

The silverback is the center of attention. He makes all the decisions, determines group movements, mediates conflicts, and locates food. Grooming strengthens the bonds within the group.

You know I love gorillas (and primates in general). Today I’ll talk about how traits of female gorillas impact the entire gorilla group. I’ve mentioned this before, observing gorilla mothers give their undivided attention to their babies taught me how to be a better mother.

Do you have a favorite author, artist, musician, or social justice icon who’s given you cause for hope and inspired you? As I write Voices from the Mist, The Last Days of Dian Fossey (working title), I’m reminded of some of the most inspirational people in my life, Leakey’s Trimates.

As I look back on 2020, it's been a year of turning challenges into opportunities. Restricted driving days saved us a lot of money on gas. I like the idea of hand sanitizer outside every business — it makes me conscious of my health and the health of others, even people I don't know. I've had more time to write.
