Dian Fossey Voices from the Mist Update

I’ve been completely engrossed studying the murder mystery genre for the last several months. At first, I was resistant when my agent strongly suggested it. However, since I’ve immersed myself in the genre, I realize it’s a much more fascinating way to tell Dian’s story than simply relating it as linear nonfiction.

There’s a French saying, “Tout comprendre c'est tout pardonner.” To understand all, is to forgive all. I'm pouring my heart and soul into Voices from the Mist. The connection Dian and I made through our letters and our time together at Karisoke four months before her murder, cemented my commitment to illuminate parts of her legacy buried with her on Mount Bisoke.

This has led me on a thirty-five-year journey that continues today. I’ve amassed more than 1,000 documents including trial transcripts, police records, interviews, lab results, and interrogations. David and I made two trips to Rwanda in 2017 and 2019 to conduct video interviews with ten of Dian’s surviving staff members, local villagers who knew her, and even poachers eager to share their stories. Voices from the Mist will shine a spotlight on those Rwandans who knew her best, yet, were never asked to share their stories.

Meanwhile, I’m excited to move beyond the research stage, immerse myself in the writing, and move ever closer to the finish line. I invite you to become a Voices from the Mist Book Ambassador. There are several easy ways to participate.

First, follow my progress on FacebookInstagram, and Twitter.

Second, simply forward this e-mail (with your personal message) to at least one other person in your contacts (more is better). Dian’s murder is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, international cold cases of the 20th century. Everyone wants to know the truth about what happened to her and you can help spread the word as a Voices from the Mist Book Ambassador.

Third, your friends can sign up here: EvelynGallardo.com. [Those receiving our e-mails have already signed up, so it would be redundant. Only those who have not should sign up here.]

Fourth, I'd like to hear your thoughts. What's the most prominent impression(s) you have of Dian Fossey? Let me know here

I invite you to join me on this journey as a Voices from the Mist Book Ambassador. No, you don't have to pull out your passport, wear a mask, or use hand sanitizer. It's a literary adventure, so you can do it all from your device(s).

Thank you for taking a moment to read. I look forward to hearing from you.

Evelyn Gallardo

Voices from the Mist is about my husband, David, and my experiences with our friend Dian Fossey, who saved the mountain gorillas from extinction in Rwanda, Africa. We volunteered at her Karisoke Research Center in 1985, just four months before her murder.
